A Thank You from Afghanistan

The following thank you letter was received by Marg Cimafranca, (Clove Drive) from a solider that received a care package put together by HOPE Clients:

Good Morning Marg,

The huge boxes you have sent have made me particularly popular around here. Especially with the razors and Snickers bars. Thank you very, very much. It sounds like you all have quite the mission over there; please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help. And, just so you know, my guys gathered up the extra bags not used and sent them down to Marjeh. Every single item was used and very much appreciated.

Respectfully,

2ndLt Taylor, Jeremy J.

Great Job, HOPE Services Santa Cruz!

HOPE Services celebrated their annual fund and friend raising event, Take a Bite, on Sunday, June 27 at Rancho Soquel in Soquel for our programs in Santa Cruz

More than 50 guests explored the historic ranch, beautiful gardens, pieces of art, enjoyed delicious appetizers, and desserts prepared by HOPE staff. Guests also participated in a silent auction and were entertained with live music by HOPE staff member, Daniel Burns. Toby and Peggy Ames, HOPE Services client and parent, shared their story about how HOPE Services helped to make two of Toby’s biggest dreams come true. Toby participates in HOPE’s Community Membership and Media program and is an active member in his community. He recently appeared as an interviewer on a local TV station.

A heartfelt thank you to our most generous event sponsors, Ocean Honda Santa Cruz, Plantronics, and Susan and Ross Condit; to our fabulous volunteers from Kiwanis, the Boy Scouts, and to HOPE Services Santa Cruz staff. A special thank you to Robert and Bjorg Yonts for graciously inviting us back to their beautiful estate. All proceeds are benefiting HOPE Services’ programs in Santa Cruz.

HOPE Services Open House Highlights Local Programs

From The Pinnacle Fri, 28 May 2010 11:11 AM PDT

"HOPE Services hosted an open house Wednesday to share the types of programs they offer throughout the Bay Area, specifically in San Benito County. The program started originally in 1952 when a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities who believed their children deserved the same opportunities enjoyed by their siblings and friends opened one of the first preschools for children with special needs." 6th Annual Rise & Shine Breakfast for HOPE – a big success!

A heartfelt thank you to all involved!

About 200 business leaders, government officials, non-profit partners, volunteers and clients gathered for the 6th Annual Rise and Shine Breakfast for HOPE Services at Santa Clara University on May 5th and the annual presentation of the Larry Schott Humanitarian Award. Well-known business/technology reporter from NBC 11, Scott McGrew, emceed a program full of remarkable presentations about the value of fully including people with developmental disabilities in our community.

The award was established five years ago by Dianne and Gene Ravizza in memory of Dianne's late brother Larry Schott, a long-time HOPE trustee who passed away in 2005. The award honors an individual whose character reflects Mr. Schott’s dedication to helping those with developmental disabilities.

This year’s Larry Schott Humanitarian Award was presented to Maya Bareket, a client of HOPE Service’s Work Activity Program. Maya Bareket was honored for her ability to role model for other clients who to take an active part in the community. The award was presented by the former Chair of the HOPE Services Board of Directors, Roxanne Vane.

One key presenter, Director of Operations at Tyco Electronics, Tim McKinley, shared Tyco’s commitment to this important effort. “We have been proud to have HOPE Service’s clients as part of our Tyco Electronics team for over seven years. Companies need to challenge themselves and stop thinking in terms of limitations and instead think about the value that HOPE’s clients can provide.” McKinley explained that HOPE clients were instrumental in building and delivering electronic connectors for the airline industry. “If you have flown on a commercial jet in the last few years it is highly likely that the aircraft contained connectors assembled by Hope clients in Santa Clara.” “For 58 years, HOPE Services’ proud legacy of serving those with developmental disabilities has been made possible through continued community support. Today we are very pleased that so many friends, both old and new could join us to help us continue that legacy,” said HOPE Services CEO, Joe Campbell. The event raised over $40,000 in general operating expenses for HOPE Services.

Alfred Street’s Leadership Grads get their awards!

by Chris Magnin

The Alfred St. Leadership group received their graduation awards at our Leadership Luncheon held on April 21st, at Pedro’s. The group was comprised of eleven clients this year. All of the clients made a year-long commitment to be part of the group and to participate in a fundraiser. The Alfred St. Group chose the Candy for the Troops fundraiser; collecting candy and donating money for shipping the candy to our service people over seas. Besides learning the value of community involvement and service, the clients also learned about self-advocacy, their rights, and they each picked a topic and gave a short speech. Two of our leadership clients have made such an impression with their speeches that they are now involved in another type of leadership role here at Hope. Look for Maureen and Vania at company clothing drives with Hope Services… they will be the ones with the biggest smiles!

Leadership Group Supports Operation: Care and Comfort!

by Chris Magnin

The Alfred Street Leadership Program decided to support the excellent work that Marg Cimafrance and the clients do at Clove Dr. We held a "Candy for the Troops Drive" and also collected money for the shipping costs to ship all those care packages of candy. Many of the clients at the workshop donated candy and money, but the community was also involved because we collected money on Fridays during our Bike Sales the month of October. Marg Cimafrance and Cookie Crissman, co founder of “Operation: Care and Comfort”, both came to visit the Alfred St. site to personally thank the clients and to share some information about what happens to all the candy and how the money will be used. We raised $132.00, which will ship 132 pounds of candy packages!! The candy that we collected will be packaged up this weekend and be overseas within two weeks!!

Thank You Dale!

HOPE presented a plaque to Dale Yoshihara, co owner of Kyoto Palace in Campbell, recognizing him for many years of support for HOPE. First as owner-operator of Bini’s Restaurant in San Jose, and now with Kyoto Palace, Dale has generously provided technical support, gift certificates, donations and other supports for HOPE at every opportunity. Most recently, he hosted a Dine Out event that included lunch and dinner and a most generous donation. For many years of friendship to the agency, give Dale a hand when you see him.

HOPE Services - Branding Campaign Update

HOPE Services has recently unveiled a new branding campaign with the help of a local advertising agency! We’ve updated our logo and added the tagline “Your help builds hope.” Our new logo reflects the new tagline and replaces the old HOPE Services logo. The tagline was created as a result of the input you all provided weeks ago. It is a revised version of an earlier HOPE slogan. For your future HOPE Services logo/print needs, please only use the new logo: www.hopedirect.org/PRpage.html.

Since we are creating a new look and message for HOPE Services and need to be consistent in our messages to the public, please send me copies of any publicity collateral (fliers, t-shirts, mugs, coupons, etc.) that you would like to use to enhance your program needs. Sue and I will review and revise accordingly and will send you a final version. Please allow at least a one-week turn around from us.

HOPE has also placed ads in various publications over the last couple of months to promote general awareness of who we are, what we do, and how to reach us: via our website. We are tracking web hits, and they are up dramatically as a result of the campaign! For the rest of this fiscal year, we will be running an ad in the Silicon Valley Business Journal that focuses on employment for our clients, and we are airing a general awareness radio commercial on KGO News Talk 810 radio.

We will keep you posted on any new developments with the campaign, including when our new hopeservices.org website will be up and running.

HOPE Celebrates 25 Years with North Coast Medical

Twenty-five years ago, HOPE Services and North Coast Medical entered into a remarkable partnership that provided paid jobs for HOPE Services’ clients with developmental disabilities. What began 25 years ago was ground breaking: hiring individuals with disabilities to help package North Coast Medical’s rehabilitation products rather than hiring individuals without disabilities. This enduring partnership was celebrated at North Coast Medical’s facility in Morgan Hill, California. One hundred honored guests at the 25th Anniversary Celebration included HOPE Services’ employees and staff that are currently employed with North Coast Medical, HOPE Services’ CEO Joe Campbell, HOPE Services South Valley Director, Kristi Alarid, President and CEO of North Coast Medical, Mark Biehl, and Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate.

Continuing to support our troops!

by Marg Cimafranca, Employment Specialist Clove Dr

Both Clove Dr. and clients in Sunnyvale have volunteered for the "Operation Care - Support Our Troops" organization. Clients make up candy packs and insert a note in each that has Hope's mission statement so they know where it's coming from. Then each client personalizes it, by signing their (first) names on the back of the note. That way each person that receives a candy pack knows who worked on their packet. We've been getting so many wonderful responses from the troops, letters and e-mails. Click here to read a letter of appreciation from Captain Christine M. Takats. I was shocked when I opened the letter and enclosed was a check for $100 for Hope Services. Hope's clients & staff are contributing in some small way to let the troops know that we do support them and how much it means a lot to the troops.

Congratulations HOPE Seniors!

Six Seniors participated in the Leadership training this year, with Vickie Worthington as their facilitator. The group sold Nachos on two occasions at the Whittier facility to raise funds. The seniors purchased toys and delivered them to the local fire department at Christmas for "Toys for Tots." for their community project. They also practiced self advocacy skills and learned the rights of people with developmental disabilities. Carolyn Filiatrault, program manager, recognizes the strength of the training and the power it bestows so our clients are better self-advocates and participants in the community.  The leadership graduates celebrated with a luncheon at the Olive Garden Restaurant in San Jose on May 23, 2008. Each member received a plaque presented by Joe Campbell, CEO, HOPE Services. Congratulations HOPE Seniors!

Adobe Grant Helps Clients with Computer Skills!

Thanks to a $10,000 grant award from the Adobe Foundation Fund at Silicon Valley Community Foundation, 20 clients in HOPE’s innovative GAIN program are learning computer skills that enable them to learn more about their community and the world at large. With this generous award, HOPE purchased new computers, adaptive computer tools and specialized software specifically to assist those individuals with developmental challenges and severe physical disabilities in their desire to become computer literate.

How Times Have Changed!

imgPatricia Hobbs* as "Executive Secretary" uses some interesting language to describe our services. It's a reminder of the great progress we've made over the years to give our clients the respect they deserve. It also reminds us of the great debt HOPE has to Mrs. Hobbs who passed away in 2007!
